5. Gemstones are presumed to have been subjected to multiple stable, commonly used, and possibly undetectable color/clarity enhancement processes ranging from mild to severe. Most gemstone treatment or enhancement uses heat. Flux or glass additives are sometimes used to treat rubies by enhancing the color and filling natural fractures and cavities. It is always a good idea to consider this with rubies and other gemstones when using a hot ultrasonic with harsh chemicals to clean jewelry. Some treated rubies, and many other natural gemstones react poorly to these conditions. Instead, a mild detergent and warm, clean water and soft cloth should be used. Ask a professional and do additional research for more tips on the proper way to clean and care for your jewelry.
